Level 700

The Highest Level of Consciousness

Enlightenment represents the highest state of human awareness - a complete transcendence of ego and realization of one's true nature as pure consciousness.

Enlightenment

The Ultimate State of Being

Enlightenment represents the highest level of consciousness in Dr. David Hawkins' Map of Consciousness, calibrated at the vibrational frequency of 700. This rare state represents complete transcendence of the ego and realization of one's true nature as pure consciousness.

At this level, the illusion of separation completely dissolves. The enlightened being experiences direct awareness of the fundamental unity of all existence. There is no longer any identification with the personal self - only the recognition of oneself as the eternal, unchanging awareness in which all phenomena arise and pass away.

Dr. Hawkins described enlightenment as "the final state of unconditional love, peace, and joy." It's characterized by:

  • Complete freedom from all suffering and desire
  • Direct perception of ultimate reality beyond concepts
  • Unconditional love and compassion for all beings
  • Perfect equanimity regardless of circumstances
  • Spontaneous right action without egoic intention
  • Dissolution of the illusion of separate selfhood
  • Timeless awareness and presence

In the Map of Consciousness, enlightenment stands alone at the pinnacle, representing the culmination of the spiritual journey. While all levels below 700 still contain some degree of duality, enlightenment represents complete non-dual awareness.

Enlightenment in the Map of Consciousness

At 700, Enlightenment stands as the highest measurable level of consciousness in Dr. Hawkins' scale. Below it are Peace (600), Joy (540), Love (500), Reason (400), Acceptance (350), and other levels descending through the spectrum of human awareness. While all levels below 700 still operate within the realm of duality, Enlightenment represents complete transcendence into non-dual awareness.

Characteristics of Enlightenment

Non-Dual Awareness

Complete dissolution of subject-object perception. The enlightened being experiences reality as undivided wholeness, where the observer and observed are one.

Unconditional Love

Love is no longer conditional or personal but radiates equally to all beings as the natural expression of one's true nature.

Direct Perception

Reality is perceived directly without the filter of concepts or mental constructs. The suchness of things is seen as they are.

Perfect Equanimity

Complete peace that is undisturbed by any external circumstances or internal states. The enlightened remain centered in all situations.

Timeless Presence

Abidance in the eternal now, free from attachment to past or future. Each moment is complete and sufficient unto itself.

Selfless Service

Action arises spontaneously from wisdom and compassion without any sense of doership or personal gain.

Manifestations of Enlightenment

Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama)

After years of spiritual seeking, the Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, realizing the nature of suffering and the path to liberation. His teachings formed the foundation of Buddhism, one of the world's great wisdom traditions.

Consciousness Shift: From seeking (400) to complete awakening (700), demonstrating the possibility of liberation from suffering.

Jesus Christ

The teachings and life of Jesus demonstrate the characteristics of enlightenment - unconditional love, miracles, and profound wisdom. His statement "I and the Father are one" reflects the non-dual realization of enlightenment.

Consciousness Shift: Embodied the transition from human limitation to divine realization, showing the potential for God-realization in human form.

Ramana Maharshi

At age 16, Ramana spontaneously experienced enlightenment through self-inquiry ("Who am I?"). He spent the rest of his life in silent presence, radiating peace and wisdom that transformed thousands of seekers.

Consciousness Shift: Demonstrated how direct self-inquiry can lead to sudden awakening without traditional spiritual practices.

Eckhart Tolle

After a profound spiritual transformation at age 29, Tolle spent years in a state of bliss and stillness before beginning to teach. His books like "The Power of Now" have introduced millions to present-moment awareness.

Consciousness Shift: Shows how enlightenment can occur spontaneously in modern times, outside traditional spiritual contexts.

Momentary Glimpses

Many people report brief moments of enlightenment - sudden experiences of unity, timelessness, and egolessness that fade but leave a lasting impression. These glimpses often become the inspiration for spiritual seeking.

Consciousness Shift: Temporary shifts from ordinary consciousness (200-300) to moments of pure awareness (700) that transform one's worldview.

Near-Death Experiences

Many who have had NDEs report entering a state of pure consciousness, unconditional love, and unity that matches descriptions of enlightenment. These experiences often lead to permanent positive changes.

Consciousness Shift: Demonstrates how consciousness can temporarily transcend physical limitations to experience higher states of being.

The Science of Enlightenment

Neuroscience Findings

Studies of enlightened masters show unique brain patterns:

  • Gamma wave synchronization across the brain
  • Reduced activity in the default mode network (associated with egoic thinking)
  • Increased activity in areas associated with compassion and present-moment awareness

Research suggests enlightenment creates a fundamental rewiring of brain function beyond normal states.

Physiological Changes

Enlightened beings demonstrate remarkable physiological traits:

  • Extraordinary control over autonomic functions
  • Ability to enter deep states of rest while fully awake
  • Reduced aging markers and cellular regeneration
  • Consistent coherence between heart and brain activity

These suggest enlightenment affects not just consciousness but the entire mind-body system.

Quantum Consciousness

Some theories propose enlightenment represents:

  • A quantum state of consciousness beyond classical physics
  • Entanglement with the fundamental field of existence
  • Access to non-local awareness beyond space-time

While still speculative, these models attempt to explain the "miraculous" aspects of enlightenment.

Pathways Toward Enlightenment

Self-Inquiry

The direct path of asking "Who am I?" to trace consciousness back to its source. By persistently inquiring into the nature of the self, one may realize there is no separate self to be found.

Practice: Sit quietly and repeatedly ask yourself "Who am I?" without answering conceptually. Let the question dissolve your attention inward beyond thought.

Silent Meditation

Regular practice of sitting in silent awareness, allowing all thoughts and sensations to arise and pass without attachment. Over time, the space between thoughts expands into pure awareness.

Practice: Set aside 30 minutes daily to simply be aware of being aware. When you notice you've become lost in thought, gently return to bare awareness.

Surrender

Complete letting go of personal will and surrendering to the divine or higher power. This path involves trusting existence completely and relinquishing all resistance to what is.

Practice: Throughout your day, mentally offer all experiences - pleasant and unpleasant - to the divine with the attitude "Thy will be done."

Devotion

Cultivating intense love for God or the divine until the lover merges with the beloved. Through complete absorption in love, the separate self dissolves.

Practice: Choose a divine name or form that resonates with you and repeat it with deep feeling, allowing yourself to be consumed by love.

Service

Selfless service to others without thought of personal gain. By forgetting the self in service, one may discover there was never a separate self to begin with.

Practice: Engage in regular service activities with complete attention on the act itself, not on any results or personal recognition.

Experiences of Awakening

"In that moment of awakening, the entire world disappeared - not literally, but the mental construct of it vanished. What remained was infinite, boundless awareness with no center and no periphery. There was no 'me' to experience it - just pure experiencing itself. The peace was overwhelming, yet completely ordinary. I realized this had always been here, just overlooked."

Ananda M.

Ananda M.

"After years of meditation, there came a point where the meditator disappeared. What I had been seeking was revealed to be the very awareness that had always been present. The most astonishing part was realizing there was never any problem to solve - this completeness had been here all along. The search ended where it began, but everything was transformed."
